With the starting hands already been covered in a different article, you should now know that they are the major cards within your hand as they give you an early indication of the strength of your hand before you get too deep into a pot.
Seven card stud poker isn’t a hard game to learn how to play but getting the strategy for your plays correct is something that is going to take years of practise and studying of article like this one.
We are going to cover how you should play third street in your hand, something that can be the difference between winning or losing a hand, with this been your second indication of the strength of your hand.
What some players forget to remember is that the cards that follow your starter hands are dealt exposed or shown on the table, meaning that all players at the table can see the cards your holding at this point.
So if you see that the cards following your starter hand, excluding the final card, are showing two pair then you have to think that your hand, unless bettered by your hidden cards is beaten.
After all, I have yet to meet a seven card poker player who see’s an opponents cards while they are exposed, realises that he has him beat but still wants to call to see the final card.
More often that not, when this happens to you, its time to fold as the other players in the hand are obviously holding something that they feel beats your hand.
Ok so what should you be looking for on third street to ensure that you are getting into the hand with the highest chance of success?
Well there are four types of hands that should be playable at this point, with anything else other than these been folded if you are looking to become a better player and actually win something rather than your hobby costing you thousands of dollars.
The four types are:
Rolled up hands – A term that is generally used to describe three of a kind, at this point you are entering into the pot with the strongest possible hand, unless you meet another player with a higher rolled up hand.
Pairs – Term that describes two cards of the same value within your hand but there are different types of pairs that can be played here, with each having a different playing style to the others. The types of pairs available here are: Big Split, Wired pairs, Medium wired pairs and Small wired pairs.
Big Cards – Big cards is a term that refers to picture cards when they are combined, for example AKQ, KQJ or AKJ. These cards offer players the chance to hit high pairs or better as the hand progresses but over playing these is one of the biggest mistakes that beginners to seven card stud poker make, not allowing themselves to fold when the cards are running dry.
3 to a Straight flush – This describes the reference towards suited connector cards that are within the same suit and offer the player the possibility of hitting a straight flush. Its advised that if you are going to look to play these cards that you look to only do this with cards that are at the higher end of the suits value in order to offer yourself a safety net should you end up with only a flush, in case you come up against another player with a flush.
Sticking to playing cards that fall within these types increases your chances of winning while at the poker tables, with card combinations that have been left out of the listings offering a greater chance of been cracked or beaten by other players seated.
With poker been a game of using the information that you can establish, sometimes playing a hand that falls within the above types is going to be something that should still be thought about before placing your bet into the pot, using the information that is on the table will ensure that you are pleased with the play of your hand, even if you were to be beaten.
For players to increase their chances of playing winning stud poker, sticking close to the guidelines that are outlaid in this article is something that should be strongly considered and learnt as I’m offering the best advice that you can receive.
Other issues that surround playing third street are players who don’t have the ability to use the information that is given at the table to their advantage, with concentration proving not to be something that those player possess.
Even professional poker players look at the information that is offered at the table, using this to influence their next move.
An example of this is that if you start with a pocket pair and third street is dealt, showing the other two cards from that value, players have to be aware that they are only going to be able to make a pair with those cards as the other cards are already out of the deck, reducing your outs significantly should you enter into an all in situation before the end of the hand.
